Nvidia Volta: Why is it so famous and important

This is an era of high expectations from the GPU department. Nvidia, AMD and prominent graphics processor manufacturers and investing a huge sum for the R&D wing to outperform their rivals. Here we have the latest update from Nvidia stating a next generation GPU series. The Nvidia Volta GPU architecture promising a improvement in performance by a huge margin.

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia announced the Nvidia V100 GPU with seventh generation Volta architecture. The chip is expected to prouce 7.5 TFLOP/s of double precision floating point and 15 TFLOP/s of single precision performance.Volta is the successor of pascal architecture implemented in the 10 series GPUs extending from 1050 to 1080Ti and Titan XP.

Though being a humongous performer, it is going to be a disappointment for gamers since the Volta architecture is not currently expected to be released for gaming.Currently Volta architecture is being used with the supercomputers and mainframe computers working under AI. Owing to the higher processing rates, it is also the piece of cake for Virtual reality rendering and deep learning.

CEO of Nvidia has cleared all queries by stating that Volta architecture will not be incorporated in gaming in the near future, but more pascal processors are up the sleeve of company, to fulfill the needs of "frames per second angels".It has not been long since the release of 10 series GPUs and Nvidia is not ready to compromise the magic of 10 series with the release of next generation architecture, i suppose. Also it takes around $1000 to produce Volta GPUs.

Nvidia expects Pascal to be the unbeaten champion for upseen future.
Some primary features of the Tesla V100 GPU are:
  • 12nm FinFET Lithography
  • 21 billion transistor count
  • 815mm^2 Die size
  • 5120 CUDA cores
  • 900 GB/s bandwidth
  • 640 Tensor Cores
There has also been speculations over the recently announced GDDR6 memory standard. The so called GDDR6 based high end graphics cards must be the Volta series GPUs.

Even though the Volta series GPUs are a much upscaed version of existing processors, Currenty only data scientists and AI researchers have the real joy of the new architecture. We can only expect Nvidia to release GPUs for gaming in near future.
