Asus ROG GL553: Decent Gaming Laptop for 1200 Dollars

best gaming laptop

There has been a huge hustle in the near $1000 budget laptops recently. Rise of Dell 7567, Acer VX15 and Lenovo Y520 has already created speculation of companies targeting this price category. This theory has been made more thorough by the advent of Asus GL553 into the price bracket.ROG has always been a brand that could genuinely convince its gamers to be the best in comparison to Alienware and Gigabyte.

asus gl553 review
The Asus GL553 replaces its predecessor Asus GL552 which was considered as a huge value for money gaming laptop.Since then we had been waiting for the release of a similar laptop with upgraded hardware. I cant wait to blabber about the specs and tell the verdict in the end.

It is One Hell of a laptop.Combined with latest hardware and whole new design the Asus GL553 does make sense for a valuable purchase. In short, It is a budget gaming powerhouse with awesome display.

Lets see the laptop in detail

BUILD

Asus has again proved its worth in the built quality. It has a black brushed aluminum panel which has a bright orange logo and design on top that lights up on power up.Top lid is a true fingerprint magnet, making it easier to capture someones' fingerprint for later use ;D. The lid is smooth enough to open with single hand, but may seem slightly wobbly on applying pressure. Paneling on keyboard is slightly above average, since it bends a bit on pressure, but feels strong enough on usual gaming. The GL553  weighs around 2.3Kgs making it portable enough compared to other gaming laptops. Also make a note that there are lighter gaming laptops under this price bracket. The size may seem to matter some users, but it owes to the inbuilt Bluray optical drive which is extremely rare to find in gaming laptops.

Coming to the Keyboard, which is RGB backlit enabling customizing of the lighting with the software included. Keystrokes were rigid enough and had a good feedback with rattle sound. Also design of keyboard has been revamped a bit from predecessor. Especially the curve on the Spacebar reminds of the Dragonwar keyboards. Also the graphics of Asus and ROG on the laptop with bright orange shade enhances the look of laptop.

Display

Being a lower priced gaming laptop, it is expected to have cheap TN panel. Contradicting to all those expectations, this device houses a 15.6 inch Full HD matte display. It has a really wide viewing angle as promised by the manufacturer.Matte finish ensures lesser amount of reflections. Screen is very bright and ensures continued use in bright sunlight too. The 1080p IPS panel is accurate in color and contrast. The awesome built has ensures zero backlight bleed anywhere on the display.

Performance

Fulfilling the requirement of an addicted gamer, asus has provided a mediocre gaming hardware in the laptop. Under the hood is an intel i7 7700HQ processor that can support all gaming needs and high end video editing requirements. Coupled with a 16GB Ram that is expandable upto 32 GB is a pleasure to work on. Multi tasking is a piece of cake on the device.
The most relevant part is the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti on the laptop. The 1k Series GPU from Nvidia had already captured the eyes as they perform vastly on the higher side compared to their predecessors the 900 series. GL553 also has a smaller model with a GTX1050 in the GPU slot costing a $100 less, but honestly, i think that extra 100 dollars is worth investing as it has a huge difference in performance in comparison with GTX1050 Ti.

Storage is a 1TB 7200rpm HDD added with a 128GB SATA3 SSD for faster startups. Laptop performs pretty much awesome and can handle games much easier than similarly priced laptops. It can run Battlefield 1 at 45 to 50 fps and high settings. And Paladins at a good 90 to 100 fps which is good at this price point.
The 44Wh battery will last for around 4hrs on usual usage and 1hr on heavy usage.Charger is a 20 volts travel adapter which i found was a bit bulky.

Verdict

As to wrap up our views on the laptop, It is a lower budget gaming laptop. Meant for serious travelling gamers, built under a good chassis and housing good hardware, it can be appealing to a large number of people. With a unique display in its class, It can be useful for serious video editors.
